Périgord

In the 13th century, the South-West of France was the scene of a tremendous urban and human adenture. Driven by the Seigneurs (Lords) of Armagnac and Béarn, and the crowns of France and England, almost 500 “new towns” were developed on the basis of a social and commercial lifestyle. The Périgord Bastides were ideal cities then, liberal before their time, defending equity and combining social and economic interests. Today they offer holidays which are festive, unusual and sporty, and above all… very warm.
Ancient castles have always got new stories to tell: From political brawls and incredible events, the Counts of Toulouse, the Royal dukes of Aquitaine and their senechals from Gascogne, and the kings of France and England shaped the history of the Périgord Bastides through the centuries. As you visit, you will be surprised to come across extraordinary buildings, which were strategic points but still today give startling accounts of the past…
