Saint-Tropez / Gassin / Ramatuelle

In the 50s, the former fishing-village Saint-Tropez developed to „Saint Trop“, a meeting place for the rich and beautiful, who practiced here the liberalization of old conventions at a time when bare breasts still caused a scandal. St.-Tropez is associated with names such as Brigitte Bardot, Vadim, Gunher Sachs, BB’s second husband, Audrey Hepburn and Jeanne Moreau.
Even nowadays, the town lives on this image: Shortly before sunset, the harbour promenade turns into a fair of vanities and the old game of „to see and to be seen“ is being played again evening after evening.
In this colourful pedestrian area with its en vogue boutiques and galeries it is overcrowded in the early evening hours, and on Place Carnot the elderly play Péthanque in the shade of the plane-trees. It is difficult to escape from this enchanted atmosphere. The most beautiful beaches are to be found on the peninsula of St.-Tropez, as e.g. the bay of Pampelonne with a beach covered with fine, white sand stretching over 10 to 12 km. There are also beautiful beaches on Cap Lardier.
These are, however, not the ideal places for those looking for total tranquility. This can be found further on in the hinterland. Even the picturesque villages on the peninsula such as Gassin and Ramatuelle have meanwhile become busy touristic spots with nice pubs and a wonderful view. The real-estate prices are among the highest on the Côte d’Azur.
